Chief Estimator / Director of Estimating – Permanent – 3262

About the Opportunity

There’s a difference between running estimates and running estimating. Most senior estimators never get the second job, because most firms already have someone in the seat. This client doesn’t. They’re an established builder with three decades of commercial, institutional, and light industrial work behind them, growing their GTA operation on signed backlog, and the person who leads pre-con for that operation hasn’t been hired yet. That’s the seat.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Leadership of the estimating and pre-construction function for a growing Ontario operation: the people, the process, the tools, the win rate
  • A seat in pursuit strategy. Which clients, which sectors, which jobs to walk away from; you’re in that conversation, not receiving its output
  • Client-facing pre-construction work. This firm sells design-stage advice on cost, schedule, and constructability as a core service, and you’re the one delivering it
  • Hiring and developing the estimators under you as the workload grows
  • Direct reporting line to senior leadership, with genuine room to run the function your way

About You

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • You’ve led estimating teams or been the de facto lead, and you’re done waiting for the actual title and mandate
  • You’ve priced and won ICI work in the Ontario market, and clients who’ve sat across from you would take your call
  • You have opinions about how a pre-con department should run: software, sub coverage, bid strategy, handoff to operations. You’ve just never had the authority to implement all of them
  • You’ve spent enough time at firms where every decision needs three signatures and a committee, and you’re ready for one where it needs a good argument

About the Job

  • A department to build, not inherit. The systems you set up are the systems
  • An entrepreneurial operation where the approvals chain is short and the politics are shorter
  • Hybrid flexibility, because the firm hires adults and treats them like it
  • A competitive salary ranging from $150,000 to $190,000, dependent on experience in this role
